75. Is the Grass Greener? Contemplating more painting and decorating

Wednesday 8 March 2023

It’s 07:56 and I’ve been up for an hour, largely admiring the frost and sunshine and looking at pictures in the news of London and the southeast with snow. It’s apparently minus seven here. It looks beautiful though, especially now the sky is so blue.

Food-wise, we are adequately stocked up for a week or more of not going out. Chris’s son Sam is/was supposed to be visiting from Durham Friday to Sunday but it’s looking increasingly likely we’ll have to postpone. That’d be the second time a visitor has had to cancel due to the weather, resulting in a 50:50 chance of success for people coming to stay over winter – hmm, but it’s supposedly spring now. Anyway, I’m not intending to write another weather-based post, despite having covered the weather in the first two paragraphs.

I appear to have stalled where house-sorting is concerned. I did, however, try to buy a few things we need, drain covers, raised beds for vegetables and foam and wadding to pad the plywood headboard that Mitch made for us. All was going well with the drain covers until I discovered you need to know the inner as well as the outer measurements and I lost the will to go outside and measure more. So they haven’t been ordered. Mitch had suggested we try cheaper, metal raised beds due to the high cost of wood at the moment (that bothers me, seeing as we’re surrounded by trees that are being felled for the logging industry). Turns out the metal ones are more expensive than I expected as well, so I didn’t order those. I measured the area of headboard that needs covering, but then I got into a pickle with all the choices of foam, how thick it needs to be, what kind of wadding to use. So, I didn’t order any foam or wadding, but I did email a foam and wadding company with my queries so I might be able to order that today.

The annex area off the living room is kind of my favourite room but I can’t bear the walls being so ‘putty’ in colour. I’m inching closer to painting them either the very dark green I have or the dark pinky-burgundy. Or buy yet another paint to make it the kind of green I probably have more in mind. Hmm.

We have a few white (now a bit grubby) spindles and newel posts up the top half of the staircase. The white of them looks like an undercoat, like they’re screaming out to be dressed. I’m thinking of painting them the same colours as the bedframe. Neither of us are beige/taupe/putty/white paint people and the house still has a ‘shades of brown’ feel to it. When it’s minus-seven outside and likely soon to be not significantly warmer than that indoors, it’s not the time to paint. But that’s definitely on the agenda.

Today, I will largely be desk-based again, which in this house with the view I have is not something that bothers me.
