39. Is the Grass Greener? Room on a windowsill for a Hornby hipster street food outlet

Tuesday 11 January 2023

Pretty much all day yesterday, it rained and was very windy. At times, you could see big balls of rain blowing and scattering. We know that Scotland is wet and that it rains a lot more than it does in Kent and the southeast, but yesterday’s efforts were most definitely exceptional in terms of our familiarity. And it had rained the day before and the day before, though not as much. Today, for now, it’s merely windy and grey.

We have a rug on order, due to be delivered by DPD on Monday. I tracked it and at 5pm it was updated that it wasn’t possible to find the address, they’d try again another day. Yesterday, it was out for delivery “before 8pm”. By about 6pm, it was officially not going to be arriving. This morning, it is still “on the way, but running late”. I realise now that this is a regular occurrence for this address.

However, by its delay arriving, I have been using the area of the house that ‘will’ look lovely when the rug and the old charpai/charpoy (long, thin, low Indian bed-bench) arrive and it’s a kind of sitting area (and for a TV if we ever get one, which I suspect we will). On the deep window ledge, I laid out some of the Hornby train track and trains that I kept back from Chris donating them to a shop. I kind of liked the idea of having a bit of it out on display and, as there were so many food truck opportunities with the empty buffet carriages and a few non-Hornby street food vehicles, I decided to create a hipster street food scene. Sadly, I only have about three people, very much 1950s hipster-style (that’s stretching it, they all have suits and briefcases). Chris, meanwhile, decided to order me some miniature hipsters. While searching for suitable figures online, he came across an array of niche miniatures, including nudists (some of whom eBay had pixelated where appropriate), prostitutes and pimps. I had no idea, although I suppose it isn’t surprising that all tastes are covered when it comes to miniatures. My hipster street food scene is a little disappointing but I am convinced that when, one day, we have visitors, they will comment on the model railway element of the display. There is something extraordinarily appealing about model railways. Chris couldn’t resist supervising (and ultimately taking over, which I was happy about as I was getting in a pickle with the bridge and an excess of bends).

Yesterday, I did a lot of desk work, which I needed to do. I was pleased that I did one area of sorting (the train set), went through some more Google drive photos to delete and clear some space and have started organising two years of mobile phone photos. Today, I have a bee in my bonnet about going to Ikea …
