260. Is the Grass Greener? November snow

Thursday 30 November 2023

No, I am most definitely not ready for (A) December or (B) to be thinking about any element of Christmas. I have a December-floodgates-open kind of mindset. Today, however, looks like it’s December already because there is snow! Okay, so it’s just a light covering, but it is still most definitely snow rather than frost.

There are Velux windows upstairs in this house. When it snows or there is a hard frost, the frost or snow covers them like a curtain. The bright moon lit the snowy Velux beautifully this morning. This time last year we didn’t have Velux blinds and I’m remembering how lovely it was seeing the moon in the night and being more aware of clear nights and the stars, but also how much light shines from the moon, and not just the days around a full moon. I enjoyed being cocooned in two duvets and a quilted throw with the blind open and the moon lighting up the snow-covered window early this morning. I had woken up because my nose was very cold so had got up to put a small fan heater on. Did the trick, though I didn’t sleep again.

Ice and black ice

Unsurprisingly, the washing I hung out yesterday didn’t dry. Not even close. But it amazes me how satisfied I feel about hanging washing out, even, it transpires, if it doesn’t dry.

I am far too distracted by the sun, some ominous grey cloud heading this way and some splendid-looking male pheasants strutting around in the snow, one having just jumped up onto our gate.
