237. Is the Grass Greener? A flat full of drying clothes

Thursday 2 November 2023

It’s 07:44 and it’s raining, the kind of rain that you know will soak you as soon as you’ve been outdoors for a minute. In England, the southwest and further southeast is being battered by wind and more rain, which is forecast to head to London, though dying down by then. Scottish Borders seems to be the better option for weather today. I’m supposed to be meeting a friend around London Bridge at 10:10 to walk back here but I think we’ll have to see how the next hour or so goes. It is very hard to imagine weather chaos not particularly far away from you when it’s kind of normal where you are. My mum is in a more stormy area and said that she’s heard of trees down nearby, a lot of tree debris around and wheelie bin movement.

Yesterday evening, Chris and I walked to a DLR stop to meet a friend, Nana. We all carried on to Deptford/Surrey Quays and had an exceptionally good Vietnamese meal. It was great to be able to walk out for dinner and spend a few hours catching up with a friend.

The flat is still full of drying clothes. The fourth and, hopefully, final wash will take place today. I had no idea how much washing I’d been saving up for this trip back to London and warm conditions for drying clothes. I also washed bed linen, bath mats, a throw and a big towel, ie it wasn’t just clothing.

It’s day two of being in London and I’ve not quite adjusted my tastebuds to London water, but I’m wildly hopeful this morning’s tea won’t make me grimace. I know it’s obvious the water will taste different from a spring and UV versus through industrial chemical filtration systems but it still amazes me the variation in water taste and skin-feel (my skin is getting more and more dry here).
