206. Is the Grass Greener? Warm, sunny, beautiful; early September in Scotland

Wednesday 6 September 2023

I got up early and worked later than usual last night. The reward was an extended lunch break combined with a walk through nearby woodland and marshes and a coffee break. The weather is beautiful up here, in the twenties, a cooling breeze and sunshine. We have done three consecutive days of clothes washes, all of which have dried during the day. I have weeded in the garden, walked and eaten outside for lunch. It’s good to feel I’ve been making good use of the lovely weather, and with the cool breeze I know it’s been a lot more comfortable than it has in London, which has been in the low 30s and quite a lot warmer overnight.

I’m in Scotland until early Tuesday when I’m driving down to London ahead of eight nights in Lanzarote followed by a currently uncertain number of days in London. I think the sunny weather here is forecast to break on Sunday and even London should be cooler by Tuesday. I realise that when I get back to Scotland in the last week of September, even if it’s sunny it will likely be quite a bit cooler and summer will feel very much gone. Similarly, the leaves and colours are changing already and grass has been cut for hay, currently drying in the sun, and a few fields nearby have been ploughed. I don’t generally enjoy the transition from summer to winter, though that’s surprising in the sense that I love the long days but I’m always relieved when I can start wearing my winter clothes. I’m not a hot weather person, despite my love of sunshine and upcoming holiday to Lanzarote. I kind of don’t like missing some of these transition weeks because I don’t like the shock of it suddenly looking and feeling like autumn. Chris and I are also both dreading the cold and wet months ahead and getting to grips with the crappy heating system and the multi-fuel burner, which I know we have to get used to and use this winter.

There has been a bit of respite from summer issues of no water and midges. I foresee burner, heating and goodness knows what other issues coming up over the next few months. Sigh.
