165. Is the Grass Greener?

Tuesday 11 July 2023

I looked through photos on my phone yesterday and noticed quite a few I had taken with a view to identifying the plant or creature, so I think this will be another nature identification post. I impressed myself talking about meadowsweet the other day and felt pleased that I would previously have described it as “that stuff that looks a bit like cow parsley”.

All of these photos are taken from around the house over the last few weeks and identification is from Google Lens and other identifier apps, but I feel mildly optimistic they’re right, except where identified as uncertain/TBC. Many of these photos looked clear/sharp on the screen of my mobile; many did not end up sharp and clear. Too much wind in Scotland is my excuse for blurring.

Trifolium pratense (red clover)
TBC Primula veris (cowslip)
TBC Sanguisorba officinalis (great burnet)

Ranunculus acris (meadow buttercup)

Juncus conglomeratus (jointed rush)
Galium verum (lady’s bedstraw)
Eriophorum vaginatum (hare’s tail cottongrass)
Dactylorhiza fuchsii (common spotted orchid)
