241. Is the Grass Greener? First wood order for the cabin

Tuesday 7 November 2023

I have just ordered wood from a timber merchant. I was very apprehensive about making the call and placing the order but it seemed to go okay. I felt very out of my depth and I’m not convinced I have the right order. There was reference to colour and something darker not being available. I wasn’t expecting colours. Ho hum. The wood I have ordered is for a pair of saw horses and the floor and legs of my cabin. Annoyingly, they aren’t coming out to this area this week. My friend Becky is coming up on Thursday for a long weekend of cabin building. I am now in possession of a mitre saw (an enormous, heavy box was delivered when it was dark and pouring with rain last night) and I have a handheld circular saw and other bits and pieces on order. We have lots of scraps of wood around so I think Becky and I can practise using the saws and maybe do something with two spare pallets. It would be good to start the cabin with at least a semblance of sawing know-how. I actually feel a renewed sense of excitement and possibility about the project. Assuming I have ordered the right wood …

Uniqlo thermals. They are so good. It turns out that most of my friends I’ve mentioned them to already knew that they were the dog’s bollocks/bee’s knees/best thing since sliced bread. I did exactly what I said I didn’t want to do though, wear the thermal sweatpants out. Lesson learned. It needs to be significantly colder than it currently is for them not to be too hot once you’ve started walking. They were great for my sedentary existence indoors but far too hot when I went out for a walk. Though the main reason I didn’t want to wear them out is because they are neither flattering nor stylish, at least not on me.

My office is currently partially dismantled. It always amazes me how quickly and easily a room can be made messy versus how much longer it takes to put it back. Fortunately, Becky is staying from Thursday so I have a deadline to get it put back together. I only wanted to add a bookcase to the room. I’m not sure how so much has ended up being taken out of drawers, etc.

Chris and I tried to watch TV last night. It didn’t work out. We didn’t manage to watch anything we wanted to and just as I was four digits off inputting a password, I accidentally pressed “Exit” and we lost the registering we’d been inputting on the remote control. It’s not going well.

Yesterday, I somehow managed to get a lot of work done. I’m hoping for more of that today. I even had quite a long walk, which ended with my being picked up by Chris on his way back home from Peebles. I enjoyed the walk and all the colours and light.
