205. Is the Grass Greener? Oh, the anticipation of fibre broadband in the middle of nowhere

Tuesday 5 September 2023

Apparently, it’s going to get to 24°C today. When I got up before 07:00 there was a low, heavy mist. Within half an hour it had lifted, so I figure the sun must be warming up quickly to move that kind of mist so quickly. It’s really good to see so much sunshine and I’m wearing short sleeves, which didn’t feature as frequently as I would have hoped in August.

I drove part way up the road yesterday, parking at the nearest pub, then caught a lift further along the road with Chris so I could walk another stretch of road I’ve only previously driven on. It was sunny, peaceful and all-round lovely. I’d brought an apple with me, thinking I might stop somewhere to sit and admire the view. Where I started my walk was a field with two young Clydesdale horses, opposite another Clydesdale horse. I decided to eat my apple then so I could give one of them the core. Because of them, I delayed the start of my walk by about fifteen minutes; fifteen minutes very happily spent. I loved my walk back to the pub and beyond (I hadn’t got dropped off far enough away to walk 10,000 steps). I chatted to some Openreach engineers, asking about an estimate for getting fibre broadband connected. They weren’t certain but reckoned that by the end of this year was realistic. I’m mildly embarrassed how enthusiastic we are about being connected to fibre.

It was so sunny and windy (in a good way, and enough to keep any lingering midges away) that I ate my lunch outside, did some writing and reading outside and even had a very mini nap outdoors. Lovely day. In an early evening break, I even did some weeding. Sometimes, there is a need for a sunny day, as much as possible of which is spent outdoors. I can’t usually work on my laptop outside but the deckchair has a kind of sun shade roof, which was incredibly effective for the purposes of reading a screen outside. Possibly more of the same today.
